The museum

In 1576, Plantin set up shop on the Vrijdagmarkt. His descendants would live there for the next 300 years. They developed the Golden Compass into a true palazzo. The Moretus family cherished their printing shop - turned heritage. The last master, Edward Moretus, sold the premises to the city of Antwerp in 1876.

Unesco World Heritage

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes more than 1,200 sites worldwide. In 2005, Plantin-Moretus became the very first museum to be added to that list. In fact, four years earlier, its business and family archives had already been inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. Etched in bold letters into the memory of humanity.
