Philips Galle was one of the most important Antwerp print publishers of the 16th century. The print depicts an everyday scene with several market stalls where townspeople inspect and purchase poultry.
Philips Galle was born around 1537 and began his career as an engraver in Haarlem. Between 1557 and 1563 he engraved prints that were published by others, including the renowned Antwerp print publisher Hieronymus Cock. At the end of 1569 or the beginning of 1570, he settled in Antwerp, where he published a large number of single-sheet prints and print series. From 1600 onwards, Philips Galle handed over the management of his print publishing house to his son Theodoor, although he himself continued to engrave and publish several print series. He died in 1612.
