Who lived here?
From their base in Antwerp, the Plantin-Moretus family conquered the publishing world. First Christophe Plantin together with Jeanne Rivière, and later their successors: their daughter Martina Plantin and son-in-law Jan I Moretus. The Officina Plantiniana quickly became one of the leading printing works. Each new generation built on the success of the previous one. And every resident helped keep the printing works going for centuries: brothers and sisters, cousins, servants and maids. The Moretus men and their wives ran the printing works together. If either of them passed away, the other continued the business. Often the husband died first, leaving the widowed printers solely in control.
9 generations have their say
In short: teamwork through the ages. For the Moretus family, it was only logical. What the original printers Christophe and Jan started, had to be honoured and expanded generation after generation. All the more so because the printing works was their home. And their life, too. Everything was interwoven. Fathers were not only businessmen, but also family men. Sons and daughters played, but also proofread. Mothers took care of the family, but also kept the business going in difficult times. They all had their role to play. So they deserve a platform. We are delighted to introduce them to you.
