The entry of Charles V into Bologna

This print from 1530 shows the triumphal entry of Charles V into Bologna. He was crowned as Holy Roman Emperor there. The artist Robert Péril provided an eyewitness account in this print.

Emperor Charles

This print shows the triumphal entry of Charles V and Pope Clement VII into Bologna on 24 February 1530. On that day, the Pope crowned Charles as Holy Roman Emperor.

The print was made by the Liège artist and engraver Robert Péril. He was there as an eye-witness on behalf of Charles’ sister, Margaret of Austria. This is the only known copy of his work.
